Mesothelioma Risk Factors

Who is most at risk of developing Mesothelioma?

Working with and around asbestos is by far the largest risk factor for developing Mesothelioma. Exposure to asbestos at work is reported in about 3/4 of all Mesothelioma cases. But Mesothelioma has been diagnosed in some people who have no history of asbestos exposure.

Asbestos was once widely used in many industrial products, including brake linings, cement, roofing and flooring products, textiles, and insulation.

When miniscule asbestos particles float around in the air during a manufacturing process, they are usually inhaled or swallowed by at least some of the workers. This of course leads to very serious health problems.

In addition to the risk of developing Mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos also elevates the risk of developing asbestosis, lung cancer, and other types of cancers, including those of the throat and the kidneys.

Tobacco use by itself doesn't appear to increase the risk of developing Mesothelioma, but using it in combination with exposure to asbestos significantly elevates a person's risk of developing cancer of the lungs.
