Mom Trimming Her Forsythia Hedge
Click photo to enlarge
My mom has a hedge consisting of beautiful
forsythia bushes
along a portion of the edge of her lawn, and they grow so quickly that
it's a bit difficult to keep them nicely trimmed. She dearly loves
working with her flowers, but trimming those massive shrubs by hand
is simply too much for her. So...
A few days ago my brother Glen brought his handy hedge trimmer
up and we got busy tackling mom's monster hedge with it. The
powerful machine made quick work of the task, but right as we were
finishing up mom came strolling over and pointed out a place where
the top of the hedge was a bit uneven. Before we knew it she had
Glen's hedge
trimmer in her hands showing us "youngsters" how it's done. Here was
my mom...a woman who just turned 79 last week...using a dangerous piece of power equipment
while we looked on!
When the job was finally completed to her satisfaction, we moved on
to weeding and trimming the shrubbery in her largest
flower bed.
This time she left the work to us, but she stood close by
supervising and giving us a few botany lessons. It was very sunny
and hot that day, and by the time we finished up the garden work and
climbed onto the shady porch for a rest we were all very tired -
including mom. But we got to spend the afternoon with family, so all-in-all
it was a great day!
